(adj) - A figurative word or phrase is used in a different way from its usual meaning, to give you a particular idea or picture in your mind.

Synonyms: connotative, symbolic, metaphorical, representative, illustrative, descriptive
Antonyms: denotative, literal, real, exact, precise
Etymology: Late 14th Century Latin, from figura meaning "a shape, form, figure," which originally comes from the PIE word *dheigh- meaning "to form, build"
Morphology: figure - v
Example: In the figurative sense, we are a family and you are all my children.

I am a big fan of vocabulary! Why should words be dull when they can be dazzling? It is my goal for your kids to learn at least 180 impressive words this year, not just so that they will recognize and understand them, but so that they will use them.
