(adj.) - Actions that are futile are useless because they have no chance of being successful.

  • Etymology: 1550 Latin, from futilis meaning "pouring out easily" (like from a vessel), which led to "easily emptied, leaky, unreliable." This came from the word fundere meaning "pour, melt."
