incinerate

(v.) - If you incinerate something, you burn it to the point that you reduce it to ashes in order to destroy it.

  • Synonyms: burn, char, barbeque, scorch
  • Etymology: 1550s, Greek and Latin, from the Latin prefix in- meaning "into" + cineris meaning "ashes," which comes from the Greek word konis meaning "dust"
  • Morphology: incineration - n, incinerator - n, incendiary - adj
  • Example: What to do with all that garbage sitting at the dump? Why not incinerate it!
